How to create a Gmail app password

An app password is a 16-character key that lets one app read your Gmail without your real password. Google only offers it when 2-Step Verification is on. Here is the whole process.

Before you start

Steps

  1. 1

Turn on 2-Step Verification at myaccount.google.com/security if it is not on already.

  2. 2

Open myaccount.google.com/apppasswords and sign in again if Google asks.

  3. 3

Type Declutter.ai as the app name and choose Create.

  4. 4

Copy the 16-character password Google shows you. You will only see it once.

  5. 5

Paste it into the App password field on the Declutter.ai signup page and choose Gmail as the provider.

If your Gmail settings show an IMAP option under Forwarding and POP/IMAP, make sure it is enabled.

If the App passwords page is missing

How to remove it later

Open the same App passwords page and delete the entry named Declutter.ai. Changing your Google password also revokes every app password, so you will need a new one if you do that.

Questions

Common questions

Why is the App passwords page missing?

Google hides it when 2-Step Verification is off, when your account uses only security keys, when Advanced Protection is on, or when your work or school admin blocks it.

Does changing my Google password break it?

Yes. Google revokes app passwords when you change your password. Create a new one and paste it on your Declutter.ai account page.

Can I use a Google Workspace address?

Only if your admin allows app passwords. If the option is missing on a work account, ask your admin, or connect a personal inbox for now. One-click Google sign-in is coming.
